#012: Artificial Intelligence and The End of the Human Era with James Barrat

This week I sit down with James Barrat, documentary film maker and author of “Our Final Invention: Artificial Intelligence and The End of the Human Era.” James walks us through the history of AI, outlines the potential dangers, and talks about the need for a thoughtful and honest conversation about how to reap the benefits and mitigate the risks of AI in the future.

Guest bio:

Time Magazine named author and filmmaker James Barrat one of 5 Very Smart People Who Think Artificial Intelligence Could Bring the Apocalypse because of his groundbreaking nonfiction book, Our Final Invention: Artificial Intelligence and the End of the Human Era.

For more than 20 years Barrat’s award-winning documentary films have set ratings records for National Geographic, Discovery, PBS, and other broadcasters in the US and Europe.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to leave a comment. I’d be happy to suggest some resources that you might enjoy. It depends on which particular topics resonate with you or if you tend to share a number of the interests that you encounter on this site? If it’s the latter I would say that Sam Harris’ podcast, “Waking Up with Sam Harris” is a great one. Sam’s book called Waking Up: Spirituality without Religion. Sam also has a keen interest in AI, which I mention because you commented on my interview with James Barrat (whose book came recommended by Sam). I’d also strongly recommend The Jordan B Peterson Podcast and Dr. Peterson’s book “12 Rules for Life” and his online courses and religion talks (free on YouTube). If you’re particularly into yoga I would recommend the Chitheads podcast and their website, Embodied Philosophy. They also offer some nice online courses. Hope that helps to get you started! 🙂
